    03How a well gets built

    From first ask
    to first water.

Twelve weeks to build. Twenty years and more of looking after it, run by the village that asked for it.

      Listen

A village asks. We survey the ground water, map the homes and agree who runs the well.

A local crew drills 40 to 80 metres down, then tests the water before anyone drinks it.

A water committee keeps the logbook, a trained mechanic fixes it, and a sensor reports every day.

I used to leave at five with two jerrycans. Now the tap is past the school gate. I'm home before the kettle boils.
